The geographical location of home and property was carefully searched out and selected with regard to receiving the maximum amount of sunshine as well as the best temperature
consideration year round, placing special emphasis on the winter months. This, then, is a most important consideration in a wilderness setting. The log home and support
buildings are well back from and above the lake and are well protected by a gentle pine and birch forest. The winter winds that blow occasionally down the lake are not felt in
the general area of the house. This means that we are always approximately 10 degrees warmer in temperature than at lake level.
The home was built from locally obtained trees several kilometers/miles away from the home location. It was designed as a year-round dwelling, cool in summer, warm in winter.
The house is of a back split design incorporating two basements at different levels. One basement incorporates an open area more than suitable for the hanging up to dry, wet
outdoor clothing, a wood heater (that heats the entire home), an inside wood storage room, a winter months water storage tank (250 gals.) and pump, along with a work shop area, a battery solar area and a crawl space storage area. This basement has wooden and concrete floors as is appropriate, is finished, and has access to upstairs as well as an outside door. Approximate dimension: 20 ft. x 20 ft. (6 m. x 6 m.) or 400 sq. ft. (38 sq. m.).
The main floor house plan incorporates a kitchen, complete with propane stove/oven, a wood cook stove, and a 2 ft. x 2 ft. propane grill, a double sink, and functional
counter and storage space. The living room is comfortable with wood heater and stone raised hearth. The dining room is of modest proportions and is bright and very functional.
A second kitchen and general food preparation and cooking area is located along the south side of the house. This may be considered most important to the year-round function
of a wilderness home, allowing many activities to be carried out without interrupting the other kitchen. This second kitchen has a propane stove/oven, propane fridge, double
sinks, 20 feet of counter space and lots of shelf storage space. A real nice feature of this year-round room is the fact that the south wall is all in windows, facing a south
easterly direction which equates to lots of winter sunshine and light.
The back split, or higher level, has a compliment of the large master bedroom, the guest or second bedroom, as well as an indoor bathroom, incorporating bathtub, toilet and
sink. All very warm, comfortable and bright. The master bedroom has a stone hearth in one corner.

The 40 ft. x 20 ft. (12 m x 6 m approx.) post and beam greenhouse is a beautiful structure. During the growing months, this
greenhouse provides a great deal of personal enjoyment along with all the salads, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, squash, Chinese vegetables, cantaloupe etc. that are so nice to
have in a remote wilderness location. It incorporates a large wood heater and inside water tanks to ensure warm water for watering in the early spring of the year.
The gardens are a pleasure to have. They produce fine long winter keeping root crops such as potatoes, carrots, beets, onions and the brassicas.

Summer: From May to October, water is pumped from a small dam in a year-round flowing creek on the property. This water
is pumped and held in storage (500 gals) in the water tower and is distributed to main house, shower and wash house, greenhouse and gardens. The numerous flower beds, window
flower boxes etc. are all watered with a garden hose, utilizing the principle of gravity water distribution.
Winter: Water is hauled with the tractor from the lake and stored in the basement water tanks (250 gals). This supplies the house with enough water for 3 to 4 weeks
(2 people).
Grey water is disposed of by drain system to outside below ground year-round drainage system.
Solid human wastes outside outhouses.
Other waste and garbage is burned in a deep burn pit at a location on the property that is conducive to this activity.
Water: The main house and wash house have hot and cold running water during the summer season (May to Oct. 15th).
Electrical: A Honda 3500 watt gen. set supplies electricity when required. Photovoltaic solar panels complete with battery bank provide lighting and power to an
inverter. Propane lights are used along with 12 volt D.C. Halogen lighting.
Heat: Heating is by wood. A large wood heater in the basement is used during the winter months. A new heater on a stone hearth in the living room is used as required
in the late summer and fall season.
Cooking: Propane is the fuel used for the majority of the cooking. An old fashioned wood cook stove is also used.
Refrigeration: A propane fridge which is very effective at keeping things cold.
